Maybe I'm a sucker for something different, but hear me out.
Sports cars and super cars alike are so good at being cars and going fast I think we all are forgetting the point. Hell Edmunds could of brought a GTR to that comparison and decimated both the Vette and the Viper. Every mustang fanboy cries out at the sight of any sports car "B ut you coulda got this many V6 or V8 mustangs for that price!!! "
I'm sick of numbers.
Yes a 911 Carrera S will beat a F-Type V8 S around a track, and yes a Boss 302 will keep pace with an M3. You know what? I don't care. Just listen to Matt Farah talk about the F-type.
(Edit: skip to 3:00, damn kinja)
There will ALWAYS be a faster car. Literally always, unless you are the one guy with this months fastest tuned GTR. IMO we need more cars with personality. Cars in general have gotten to an engineering point where there are no bad cars for sale anymore, I mean actual bad cars. So whats next? I sincerely hope uniqueness & driving experience.
I love how Hammond ends this top gear clip about the Aventador.
(Edit: skip to 5:50, damn kinja)
Back to Vette vs. Viper .... In my rather small hometown, there are 4 fat middle aged men driving around in newish C6's. When my friend ran into a gentleman filling up his ACR in Chicago and heading to Dallas in one night, he proclaimed him a "Total badass".
I adore the Viper .... I just wish we had more characterful badass cars like it.

Ok, I read it now, to be honest, other then stop light racing, I think the viper has the upper hand on the GTR.

As a young kid, the Viper was the car I wanted the most. Posters, fact sheets, magazine articles, I saved them all.
So, yes, totally bad ass car.

I love reading stuff like this.
Numbers are just bragging rights, and you will always lose. (Seriously, always.) There is always a faster car, there is always something that accelerates quicker, there is always something that will turn in a better lap time.
As a car guy, I'll say that you will be happiest if you find a car you love, then go and get it. Numbers are irrelevant, the experience is all that matters.

Actually the run-of-the-mill 5.0 Mustang will keep pace with an M3, the Boss would destroy it. Which sort of validates your point if you think about it. The Viper is bonkers, it's ridiculous American big engined baddassery, like the Mustang, but even crazier. It proves that an automaker like Chrysler can put out something cool, fast, and awesome.

Except the new Viper is in no way the continuation of the old one.
People say "Oh you can just shut off all the systems and it goes back" but it doesn't. It does not feel the same. It does not drive the same. The whole party piece was that it was a savage beast. Now its just a beast like everything else in its segment.
It is neutered and lame and its lost its purpose.
Its like Lamborghini saying "Nope, the Aventador loses its V12"
There would be blood in the street because a large V12 is a party piece of the big Lambos. Not having one ruins the point.

As far as I know you're the ONLY one with this opinion. I'm pretty sure every review at some point says it feels just like the old Viper just slightly more controllable.
Also saying - "Except the new Viper is in no way the continuation of the old one." seems like a straight up lie. Especially seeing how its a refresh over the old chassis.

Seconded, Viper rules, new vette is and always will be an old man's ride.

Exactly. The chassis is the same, the engine is the same (albeit tweaked), the transmission is the same. How that is not a continuation of the last, I will have no idea.
It's still a monster and as you said, it's been scaring the crap out of the testers. How many times has Motor Trend discussed this?

THIS.
This is why I am working towards a Viper or Shelby Cobra. It's all about the personality. Isn't that the reason we are all Jalops? I mean otherwise there is no reason why we would like wagons, or volvos, or saabs. We like the personality in a car, not just the numbers.

Motor Trend has been scared of it atleast 4 times .... Every time they don't like it, but like I said I don't care.

Just saying "blank mustang is faster" is completely not the point I was trying to make. But in the end you called the Viper awesome, so I can get over it.

I have not been privileged to drive or ride passenger in a newer Viper, but the old ones...
I've ridden in a supercharged S2 Viper, and wow - that motor. Closest thing I have experienced to a four-wheel motorcycle.
At my deepest, darkest moment, I never wanted to commit suicide. But I did contemplate buying a S1 Viper, so maybe I subconsciously did. :)
